How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Mansfield, TX?
Tree removal quotes often stop at ground level. The stump that's left is a mowing obstacle, a tripping hazard and, for some species, a source of new sprouts. Grinding is the usual fix. Here's what it typically costs, what changes the price, and a few Mansfield-specific things to know before the grinder shows up.
Typical stump grinding prices
These figures are national typical/approximate ranges from two widely used cost guides, not quotes:
- Angi: a 2026 national average of about $250 to grind a stump, with most homeowners paying $120 to $400. Angi says large-diameter stumps can push a job up to $1,600 (Angi – Stump Grinding Cost).
- HomeGuide: $120 to $400 for the first stump and $30 to $60 for each additional stump, $300 to $800 for extra-large stumps, and minimum service fees of about $80 to $160 (HomeGuide – Stump Grinding Cost).
The two guides don't agree on every number because each uses its own data. They do agree on the main point: the first stump carries most of the cost, because the crew has to bring the machine out no matter what.
How contractors price it
| Pricing method | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Per inch of stump diameter | $2–$6 per inch | HomeGuide (Angi: $2–$5) |
| First stump | $120–$400 | HomeGuide, Angi |
| Each additional stump | $30–$60 (HomeGuide) / $40–$75 (Angi) | HomeGuide, Angi |
| Hourly (big or many-stump jobs) | $100–$200 per hour | HomeGuide |
| Minimum fee | About $80–$160 (Angi: about $100) | HomeGuide, Angi |
Sources: HomeGuide; Angi. Approximate ranges; your quote may differ.
How to measure your stump: HomeGuide says contractors measure the diameter at the base of the trunk, at ground level, not just the flat cut surface. Measure the widest point across, including any root flare, and include that number when you ask for quotes.
Cost by stump size
Angi publishes estimates by diameter for a single stump:
| Stump diameter | Angi estimate (2026) |
|---|---|
| 6 inches | $118–$130 |
| 12 inches | $124–$160 |
| 18 inches | $136–$190 |
| 24 inches | $148–$220 |
Source: Angi. These are the grinding charge only; minimums, cleanup and access fees can be extra.
Many mature shade trees in North Texas yards, such as oaks and pecans, leave stumps well over 24 inches across. For those, HomeGuide's extra-large range of roughly $300 to $800 is the more realistic guide.
What raises or lowers the price
Wood type and age
Both guides say hardwoods cost more because they take longer to grind and need bigger machines. Angi names oak, walnut and maple as species that often carry extra labor. Older, partly rotted stumps are usually easier and cheaper to grind than a fresh, solid one (Angi).
Access
Grinders range from small machines that fit through a backyard gate to large tow-behind units. If your stump is behind a narrow fence gate, on a slope, or close to the foundation, expect more time and cost. Angi says some pros charge about $50 per hour extra for hard access, or a flat fee of up to $200 (Angi). Measure your gate width and include it with your request.
Number of stumps
Because the first stump covers the trip and setup, each additional stump costs much less. If you have several, do them in one visit. Angi's table shows 5 stumps at a minimum of about $260 to $400 in total, compared with $100 to $150 for one (Angi).
Grinding depth
HomeGuide says a standard job grinds 4 to 6 inches below ground. Grinding out the whole stump and large roots up to about 18 inches deep is more labor and costs more. If you plan to lay sod, ask for enough depth to cover with soil. If you want to plant a new tree in the same spot, HomeGuide recommends against it unless the roots are gone and the soil is replaced (HomeGuide).
Timing
Angi says winter is usually the cheapest time for tree work, including stump grinding, with savings of up to 20% because demand drops (Angi). In North Texas, demand often jumps after spring and summer storms, so a non-urgent stump is a good job to schedule in the off-season.
Add-ons that can show up on the bill
- Chip cleanup and haul-off: HomeGuide lists about $2 to $4 per inch of diameter. Angi says $50 to $200 to haul debris away.
- Root removal: grinding doesn't remove the roots. HomeGuide cites about $75 to $150 per hour for digging them out, and Angi about $100 to $200 per hour.
- Lawn repair: both guides list sod at about $1 to $2 per square foot installed. HomeGuide lists topsoil at about $10 to $50 per yard.
Ask whether the quote leaves the chips in the hole, rakes them into a pile, or hauls them away. Leaving them is the cheapest option. Many homeowners use them as mulch.
Mansfield-specific things to know
Underground lines: the 811 rule
A grinder cuts into the soil around the stump, and buried gas, electric, cable and irrigation lines are common in residential yards. Texas Utilities Code § 251.151 requires a person who intends to excavate to notify a one-call center no later than 48 hours before work starts, excluding weekends and legal holidays (Tex. Util. Code ch. 251). Texas811 says the requirement applies even in your own backyard, that the service is free, and that when you hire a contractor, contacting 811 is the contractor's job. It suggests asking the contractor for the ticket number (Texas811 homeowner guide). Private lines like sprinkler pipes usually aren't marked by utilities, so point those out to the crew yourself.
Oak stumps and oak wilt
If you're removing an oak, TexasOakWilt.org says freshly cut oak stumps should be painted right away, just like pruning cuts, so sap beetles can't carry oak wilt spores to fresh wood (TexasOakWilt.org). That matters most from February through June. Our oak wilt timing guide has the details.
Getting rid of stump debris in Mansfield
The City of Mansfield's trash collection page says regular collection takes brush tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet and about 50 pounds or less. Tree stumps and larger limbs fall under a separate bulky brush service, which must be scheduled with Frontier Waste Solutions and which the city lists at $160 per hour with a one-hour minimum. Residents may also haul tree debris to a landfill. If your quote doesn't include haul-off, factor that in.
Removing the tree itself
Grinding a stump that's already there isn't the same as cutting down a live tree. If the tree is still standing, Mansfield's tree ordinance may apply. Read our Mansfield tree permit guide first, and see our tree removal cost guide for the full price picture, since bundling removal and grinding in one visit usually saves money.
Grind it yourself or hire it out?
Rental grinders are available, but the numbers often don't favor doing it yourself. Angi lists rentals at about $100 to $300 per day, and HomeGuide about $100 to $400 per day. For one or two stumps, that's close to what a pro charges, without the risk of hitting a line or getting hurt. HomeGuide says renting for a few stumps often costs more than hiring a professional. DIY makes more sense for many small stumps on open ground, after an 811 locate.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Is the price per stump, per inch or per hour, and is there a minimum?
- How deep will you grind, and can I lay sod over it afterward?
- Are chip cleanup and haul-off included?
- Will your machine fit through my gate? (Give them the width.)
- Will you request an 811 locate, and can I have the ticket number?
- Can you show proof of liability insurance?
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to grind one stump near Mansfield, TX?
No source publishes Mansfield-only prices. National guides put one typical stump at roughly $120 to $400, and Angi gives a national average of about $250 (Angi; HomeGuide). Minimum fees of about $80 to $160 are common, so even a small stump rarely costs less than that.
Is stump grinding priced per inch?
Often. HomeGuide cites about $2 to $6 per inch of diameter and Angi about $2 to $5. Contractors usually measure the widest point at ground level, not just the cut top (HomeGuide).
Does stump grinding remove the roots?
No. Grinding removes the stump to a few inches below ground, and the roots stay in the soil and rot over time. HomeGuide says standard grinding goes 4 to 6 inches deep, and full root removal is a separate, costlier job (HomeGuide).
Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding in Texas?
Texas law requires anyone who plans to excavate to notify the 811 center at least 48 hours ahead, excluding weekends and holidays, and Texas811 says that applies in your own backyard. If you hire a contractor, Texas811 says contacting 811 is the contractor's job, and you can ask for the ticket number (Texas811).
