When to Trim Oak Trees in Mansfield, TX (and How to Avoid Oak Wilt)

Short answer: Don't prune or wound oak trees from February through June, and paint every oak cut or wound immediately, any time of year. For routine oak trimming, aim for late fall or the coldest part of winter. (Texas A&M Forest Service; TexasOakWilt.org)

Oaks are some of the most valued shade trees in North Texas yards. They're also exposed to oak wilt, one of the most destructive tree diseases in Texas. The good news is that the most important prevention step costs nothing: trim at the right time and paint your cuts.

What oak wilt is

According to Texas A&M Forest Service, oak wilt "is one of the deadliest tree diseases in the United States, killing millions of trees across 76 Texas counties" (TFS, Feb. 2025). It's caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum, which invades the tree's xylem, the vessels that carry water. The tree reacts by plugging those vessels, which starves the leaves of water and slowly kills it.

TFS says all oaks are susceptible, but not equally:

Why the February–June window matters

Oak wilt spreads in two ways, TFS explains: above ground by sap-feeding beetles, and underground through connected roots.

The above-ground route is why timing matters. In late winter and spring, red oaks that died of oak wilt the year before can form fungal mats under the bark. TFS says these mats have a fruity smell that attracts small sap beetles (nitidulids). The beetles pick up spores and can then fly to a fresh wound on any oak and start a new infection center. Fungal mats and beetle populations both peak in late winter and spring, so a fresh pruning cut in that season is an open door.

"Because of this, pruning or wounding trees should be avoided from February through June and no matter the time of year, all oak tree wounds should be painted immediately."Texas A&M Forest Service, "Prevent the spread of oak wilt in Texas" — tfsweb.tamu.edu

"Wounds" don't just mean saw cuts. TFS lists construction activity, livestock, land or cedar clearing, lawnmowers, string trimmers and storms as sources of wounds that can let infection in. If you nick an oak's trunk or surface roots while mowing in April, paint it.

The best time to trim oaks in Mansfield

The Texas Oak Wilt Partners' Pruning Guidelines for Prevention of Oak Wilt lay out the calendar:

The TexasOakWilt.org pruning FAQ adds that the best time to prune is generally when trees are dormant and fewer insects and diseases are present, which it gives as November through January. Its management page cautions that summer pruning (July or August), though lower risk for oak wilt, is still stressful for the tree.

MonthsOak trimming guidance
November – JanuaryGenerally the best window. Still paint all cuts.
February – JuneAvoid pruning or wounding oaks (highest oak wilt risk).
July – AugustLower oak wilt risk, but heat stresses trees. Wait for fall unless there's a safety need.
September – OctoberGood time to plan and schedule oak work, ideally late fall. Paint all cuts.

Exceptions: when spring pruning is okay

Safety comes first. The pruning guidelines allow work from February through June to:

If you must cut during the risky season, TexasOakWilt.org says to make as few cuts as possible and paint every one immediately.

How to paint oak wounds

TexasOakWilt.org says "any type of paint (latex, oil-based, spray-on, brush-on, or wound dressing) will suffice," as long as it's applied right after the cut. The paint isn't there to heal the wound. It's a barrier that keeps spore-carrying beetles from reaching fresh tissue. Paint pruning cuts, freshly cut stumps and damaged surface roots too. Only oaks need painting. Between trees and job sites, the guidelines recommend cleaning tools with a 10% bleach solution or Lysol.

When you hire a tree service for oak work, ask: "Will you paint every oak cut immediately, and will you clean your saws between trees?" A crew familiar with Texas oaks should say yes without hesitating.

Signs of oak wilt to watch for

If you aren't sure, TFS recommends contacting a certified arborist. You can also reach your local Texas A&M Forest Service office. TexasOakWilt.org has a "Find My Forester" tool.

If oak wilt is found nearby

Oak wilt can't be cured, but TFS describes ways to manage it:

TFS notes that losing trees to oak wilt can reduce property values by 15 to 20 percent, so prevention protects your home's value as well as your shade.

Mansfield rules to keep in mind

Mansfield's tree ordinance generally doesn't require a permit for reasonable pruning by or for the owner when it's unrelated to construction. It does say protected trees shouldn't be pruned in a way that significantly disfigures them or would likely kill them (Mansfield Code § 99.39). Removing a dead or diseased oak may involve the city's permit rules, so read our Mansfield tree permit guide and check with the city first. For budgeting, see tree removal costs in Mansfield.

Frequently asked questions

When should I not prune oak trees in Texas?

Texas A&M Forest Service advises avoiding pruning or wounding oaks from February through June (TFS). Texas Oak Wilt Partners' guidelines give the dates as February 1 through June 30.

Should I paint oak pruning cuts?

Yes. Texas A&M Forest Service says all oak tree wounds should be painted immediately, no matter the time of year. TexasOakWilt.org says any type of paint or wound dressing works if it's applied right away (TexasOakWilt.org).

What is the best month to trim oak trees?

TexasOakWilt.org calls late fall the best time to prune oaks and says the least hazardous periods are the coldest days of winter and extended hot spells in mid-to-late summer (Pruning guidelines). Its FAQ says the dormant months of November through January are generally best.

Can an oak tree with oak wilt be saved?

Sometimes it can be managed but not cured. Texas A&M Forest Service describes fungicide injection, which protects only the injected tree, and root trenching to stop underground spread. Infected red oaks should be cut down and burned, buried or chipped soon after discovery (TFS).
